Women’s Tennis: WVU Falls to No. 55 Ohio State

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – In its opening match of the season, the West Virginia women’s tennis team was defeated by No. 55 Ohio State, 7-0, in Columbus, Ohio.
“We had too many errors against a good team,” said coach Tina Samara. “If you give a team like Ohio State points, they are not going to give them back. Overall, though, there were some positives that we were able to take away from today’s match.
The Buckeyes began the match by taking two of the three doubles matches and earning the doubles point. Junior Emily Mathis and sophomore Mary Chupa downed the combo of Kelsey Haviland and Fidan Manashirova.
“Emily and Mary played at the level they are capable of, and they beat a solid number one doubles teams," Samara said. "As for Madison (Hromada), that was the first time she played in a college match, and that was probably the first time she had seen live match action since high school.”
The struggles for the Mountaineers continued into singles play, as Ohio State captured all six singles matches.
Mathis tried to take one victory away from the Buckeyes, though, as she nearly pulled off a victory in the No. 1 singles spot. Mathis fell in the first set of her match against Kelsey Haviland, 6-3, but battled back for a 6-3 second set victory. In the tiebreak, Mathis led 7-5, but Haviland, who was an All-Big Ten performer last season, battled back to take the third set 10-7.
“Emily was in position to win her the match, but it came down to her lack of experience in a situation like that,” Samara said. “Her decision making got loose, but her ability to compete in a match of this caliber should validate to her the improvement and strides she has made since the fall.”
The victory moved the Buckeye’s record to 1-1 this season.
The Mountaineers will return to action this Saturday, as it hosts it Morehead State in its first home match of the season.
Action at the Ridgeview Racquet Club is set to begin at 1 p.m.
