VILLANOVA, Pa. – With no room for error, the West Virginia University volleyball team fought to gain a 5-1 lead to start the third set before a Villanova comeback took the set and the match 3-0 (14-25, 23-25, 23-25).
The Wildcats took control of the set as they quickly took a 20-15 lead before two straight kills from senior Michelle Kopecky started a 5-1 run that led to a Villanova timeout at 21-20. Villanova answered with a kill from Krista Andersen and hitting errors from the Mountaineers. WVU held off match point two times with a block from freshman middle blocker Evyn McCoy and freshman outside hitter Halle Kearney before another kill from Andersen ended the set and the match.
“I think although we didn’t have the outcome we wanted tonight, we took a step in the right direction, tried some new things with our lineup and we played well,” coach Jill Kramer says. “We played great as a team and we are just looking forward to Georgetown now and looking forward to continuing in the right direction.”
WVU started off the match strong with an immediate kill from freshman outside hitter Halle Kearney. The teams traded points until five all when a kill from Allison Williams gave Villanova a 9-5 advantage. WVU cut the lead to five with two Wildcat errors in a row at 19-14 before a 6-0 run gave Villanova the first set 25-14.
Down a set in the match, WVU started the second set slow with 12-7 deficit before kills from Kopecky, Kearney and senior setter Kari Post pulled the match even at 17-17. The set went back and forth until a kill from Maggie Mergen put the Wildcats up 22-20. The Mountaineers could not make up the points and lost the set 25-23.
Kopecky led WVU with 11 kills, only one error and a .345 hitting percentage. The Mountaineers defense recorded 49 digs with 12 from senior outside hitter Serinna Russo, and 10 each from Post, junior defensive specialist Stephanie Mock and freshman setter Courtney Robison.
The Mountaineers will travel to Georgetown next to take on the Hoyas Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m., at McDonough Arena.
