Men's Soccer: WVU Falls on Road

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Despite allowing just two shots the entire match, the No. 25 West Virginia men’s soccer team fell to James Madison 2-0 on Wednesday evening at the JMU Soccer Complex.
"Soccer is a cruel game and that's the way it goes," coach Marlon LeBlanc says. "They had two shots the entire game and we had the ball for about 70 percent of the game, yet they ended up on the right side of things."
WVU (4-4-1) outshot the Dukes (5-1-1) 8-2, as well as holding the corner kick advantage at 6-4. The contest was also very chippy with James Madison earning 20 fouls to WVU’s 10, while there was a total of four yellow cards awarded.
"You had to give them credit because they defended as a collective unit for the majority of the game and they caught us on their two opportunities," LeBlanc says.
Patrick Innes struck for the Dukes with a goal in the 23rd minute for his fifth of the season. After a foul call to defender Eric Schoenle, James Madison was awarded a free kick on the right side of the field 25 yards out. Innes took the free kick and was able to place it right between WVU keeper Justin Holmes and the post to Holmes’ left for the opening strike.
JMU extended the lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute on a goal from Paul Wyatt who took a left-footed shot from 18 yards that redirected off a WVU defender and past Holmes.
The Mountaineers dominated possession throughout the match, including two late chances from midfielder Allan Flott. After a WVU throw-in in the 83rd minute deep in the JMU zone, Flott ripped a shot that went just wide left of the JMU net. Flott had another chance a minute later on head flick that sailed wide as well.
WVU had its first opportunity of the match in the second minute when junior Shadow Sebele had a shot go wide right of the JMU net.
Solid WVU offensive pressure in the 34th minute led to a header by forward Peabo Doue header that skirted wide right of the net after receiving a cross from midfielder Uwem Etuk.
WVU registered its first shot on goal in the 37th minute from 18 yards out by Doue. Doue had another opportunity in the 44th minute, but sent the ball over the net.
WVU came out with the better half of the pressure to start the second half and the pressure paid off in the 50th minute with two consecutive corner kicks by Sebele. Both opportunities were without goals however.
The Mountaineers have now completed non-conference play and will continue BIG EAST action with a match at Cincinnati on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m.
