MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Despite leading in most statistical categories and a last minute comeback effort, the No. 11 West Virginia men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 13 USF on Sunday afternoon in front of 1,375 fans at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The loss also snaps a 13 game winning streak at home, which was the longest active streak in the nation and started last season with a 3-2 win over UNC Wilmington on Sept. 5.
WVU (4-3-1) outshot USF (5-2-1) 14-5 and also led the corner kick battle 7-2. A total of five yellow cards were given out, all in the second half, and USF had 19 fouls, compared to the Mountaineers 11.
Junior midfielder Shadow Sebele broke the game open with his third goal in as many games in the eighth minute of action on a left-footed liner past USF keeper Chris Blais. Junior defender Eric Schoenle started the play by winning a header to freshman Andy Bevin on a goal kick from Blais. Bevin was then able to keep the ball away from the USF defenders as Sebele made a run to the middle of the field and Bevin played a perfect through ball for Sebele.
Seven minutes later the Bulls were able to tie the match at 1-1. Dom Dwyer netted his fifth goal of the season after a developed play that began with a pass from Leston Paul to Wesley Charpie on the right side of the box. Charpie then found Dwyer on the opposite side and Dwyer hit a liner to the right of WVU junior keeper Justin Holmes.
Lucas Baldin scored the game-winner for the Bulls in the 74th minute on a free kick to the far side of the net on left side of the field 25 yards away. An errant corner kick by Sebele that flew out to the middle of the field started a USF offensive rush that led to a foul and the eventual goal.
Junior forward Peabo Doue led WVU’s first offensive attack of the second half in the 54th minute bringing the ball into the USF box and drawing a corner kick after crossing the ball into the middle of the field. Junior midfielder Travis Pittman took the corner that settled to Sebele who found senior midfielder Matt Drake. Drake took a shot off the outside of his foot that Blais corralled.
Drake led all players with four shots, while Sebele had three. Dwyer finished with two for USF. Holmes took his first loss of the season in net, making two saves, while Blais finished with three saves.
WVU had four quality chances in the final 13 minutes, but was unable to convert them into goals.
In the 77th minute after receiving a pass from junior midfielder Uwem Etuk , freshman defender Paul Ehrenworth placed a cross to the head of Bevin for a shot that went just high.
The 81st minute featured a shot by senior forward Franck Tayou that looked to go off a USF defenders hand, but was awarded a corner kick instead of a penalty kick.
Sophomore midfielder Allan Flott played a perfect give-and-go with Schoenle in the 84th minute with Flott ripping a shot that was saved by Blais.
The Mountaineers return to action for their final non-conference game of 2011 at James Madison on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m.
