MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell in its second BIG EAST match of the season to Seton Hall 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 16-25, 20-25) this afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
After losing the first set, the Mountaineers (3-10, 1-1) came back to win set two before falling in the next two to the Pirates (10-6, 2-0).
“I think the positives coming out of today are that our team actually fought really hard against Seton Hall,” coach Jill Kramer says. “We still need to minimize our unforced errors and communicate better out of system. It is good to at least be 1-1 in conference before we go out on the road and we will get back after it again as we prep for Villanova and Georgetown.”
Down 11-7 at the start of the first set, the Mountaineers used kills from senior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky and freshman outside hitter Halle Kearney to close the gap and take the lead at 14-12. The Pirates fought back with kills from Meghan Matusiak and made WVU call a timeout after an ace from Alyssa Warren gave Seton Hall a 17-14 advantage. The Mountaineers could not hold off the Pirates momentum and ultimately lost the set 25-19.
The second set was all about the Mountaineers as they jumped to an early 16-8 lead. The Pirates closed the gap with three straight kills but were forced to call a timeout after two straight hitting errors put the Mountaineers up 20-13. Seton Hall held off match point four times before Kopecky recorded her 10th kill of the match to take the second set 25-20.
Seton Hall started the third set with an early 6-3 advantage before the Mountaineers went on a 4-1 run to tie the match 7-7. The teams traded points until the Pirates pulled away after a service error and three straight hitting errors by the Mountaineers. After a timeout at 21-15, WVU could not capitalize on a Seton Hall error as the Pirates went on a 4-1 run to take the third set.
With the Pirates up two sets to one, the Mountaineers overcame a deficit at the start of the fourth set to tie the game at 11-11. Seton Hall called a timeout after two straight kills from Kearney put WVU up 17-15. The Mountaineers struggled offensively as Seton Hall came out of the time out and proceeded to go on a 10-3 run to close out the set and the match 25-20.
Kopecky led the way for the Mountaineers with 15 kills and three service aces while Kearney and freshman Evyn McCoy each chipped in 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
WVU will hit the road next weekend as the team will travel to Villanova and Georgetown. The team will play the Wildcats on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. and the Hoyas on Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.
