MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia volleyball team is set to begin BIG EAST competition as it plays host to Rutgers and Seton Hall this weekend.
The Mountaineers will face the Scarlet Knights, Friday, at 7 p.m., and will return to action, Sunday, to take on the Pirates at 2 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. The match against Rutgers on Friday is a designated “Dollar Day,” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Cola products available for one dollar each.
WVU is now 2-9 on the season after going 0-3 at the UK Invitational. The Mountaineers lost to Houston (1-3), Loyola Marymount (0-3) and Kentucky (0-3).
Senior Serinna Russo was named to the all-tournament team at the WVU Volleyball Mountaineer Invitational and the UK Invitational. The Riverside, Calif., native leads the team with 210 digs and is tied with senior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky with eight service aces. Russo is currently No. 3 in the BIG EAST and No. 14 in the nation with 5.53 digs per set.
“We have been practicing for the last two weeks and took last weekend off to regroup and prepare for BIG EAST play and the girls are fired up to compete,” coach Jill Kramer says. “I think it is always fun to open up conference at home and this is a great weekend to be here. We are ready to compete against good Rutgers and Seton Hall teams.”
The Scarlet Knights are 6-10 on the season after dropping all three matches at the Hampton Inn Classic. Sophomore Brittany Bozzini was named to the all-tournament team after recording 31 digs and 29 kills.
The Mountaineers hold a 23-19 advantage over Rutgers after sweeping the Scarlet Knights 3-0 the past two years.
Seton Hall beat Princeton 3-0 on Tuesday to improve to 8-6 on the season. The Pirates went 2-1 at the Seton Hall Invitational this past weekend where Alyssa Warren and Meghan Matusiak were named to the all-tournament team. For her efforts, Warren was named BIG EAST Player of the Week after recording 6.93 digs per set.
WVU is 11-11 all time against the Seton Hall. Last year, the Pirates won 3-1 in South Orange, N.J.
