MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia junior Petra Zublasing and graduate Nicco Campriani won a combined three Gold medals at last month’s 2011 World University Games, in Shenzhen, China.
Representing Italy, Zublasing, a native of Appiano, won the women’s 10m air rifle Gold medal, while Campriani, a Florence native, won the men’s 10m air rifle and 50m rifle 3 position Gold medals.
“These are both impressive accomplishments,” said WVU rifle coach Jon Hammond. “While they each shot for the Italian team, they also represented WVU admirably.”
Zublasing, one of three returning Mountaineer National Rifle Association (NRA) All-Americans, shot a near-perfect 399 (100, 100, 99, 100) in the air rifle qualification relay and 103.42 in the finals for the title.
“There was a lot of great competition shooting at the Games,” she explained. “I just shot one shot after the other. I haven’t been training a lot in air rifle, but my behavior was good. I’m happy with the result.”
Campriani, the reigning NCAA air rifle champion, shot 599 (99-100-100-100-100-100) in the air rifle relay and 99.6 in the final, and 1175 in the 3 position relay and 102.3 in the final.
Though Zublasing has rejoined the Mountaineers for the 2011-12 season, she and Campriani also continue to compete for the Italian National Team. Each has earned an Olympic quota place for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
