MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University gymnastics team opens its 2012 season on Monday, Sept. 19, with its first official practice at Cary Gym at 2:30 p.m.
“Official practice is the first time this year we will have the whole team together in Cary Gym,” first-year coach Jason Butts says. “We’re very excited to finally give everyone some structure and guidance. The team has been working very hard throughout the unofficial practice season and at its conditioning sessions. We’re really looking forward to getting into a structured schedule, and we’re ready to work toward our exciting goals for the 2012 season.”
Tomorrow’s practice session is the first officially under Butts. Named the third Mountaineer head coach on April 26, 2011, Butts inherited a team from 37-year coach Linda Burdette-Good that went 13-10 in 2011 and finished fourth in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) and sixth at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.
All-EAGL seniors Tina Maloney and Nicole Roach return to lead the Mountaineers to their seventh EAGL title. Roach, a native of South Lyon, Mich., is a three-time first team all-EAGL bars honoree, while Maloney, a Hanover, Ind., native, is a potential all-around competitor and scored second team all-EAGL vault honors in 2011.
In total, 10 Mountaineers return this season, including sophomore Hope Sloanhoffer, a three-time first team all-EAGL honoree. They are joined by seven freshmen and sophomore transfer Erica Smith.
The Mountaineers’ 2012 schedule is slated for release later this week.
