Women's Tennis: Day Two of UNCW Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After its first day of play was marred by weather delays, the West Virginia women’s tennis team saw its first full action of the fall season at the UNC-Wilmington Collegiate Invitational in Wilmington, N.C.
Senior Catie Wickline, who won her first match on Friday, fell to Hamilton Lovett of UNC-Wilmington, 6-3, 6-0 in Flight C singles play.
Wickline will play her final singles match of the weekend against Olivia Maurice of Furman Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
In Flight B singles action, senior Veronica Cardenas started off the day with a victory over UNC-Wilmington’s Christina Riley, 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Cardenas followed her victory with a tough loss to Furman’s Kelly Sullivan.
Sophomore Melis Tanik rebounded from a hard fought opening round loss to Sophie Panarese of Georgia Tech with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Amanda Murray of Furman.
Shannon Betts of Virginia Tech cut Tanik’s charge short in yet another tough match.
The Mountaineers found their most success of the day in doubles play, as each of its combos walked away with a victory on the day.
Tanik and Wickline paired together for the first win, 8-5.
Cardenas combined with sophomore Mary Chupa for the second,8-6.
Lastly, freshman Ikttesh Chahal and junior Emily Mathis scored the third victory, 9-8.
The third day of competition will resume at the UNC-Wilmington Collegiate Invitational will resume Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m.
