Football: WVU to Recognize Talley

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is hosting a luncheon in honor of former Mountaineer All-America linebacker Darryl Talley on Friday, Sept. 23, at noon at the Waterfront Hotel.
The luncheon features an outstanding group of speakers, including former Mountaineer head coach and Hall of Famer Don Nehlen, former head coach Frank Cignetti and assistant coach Bob Simmons. Former Talley teammates from both Buffalo (Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas and Cornelius Bennett) and from WVU also will be present.
This luncheon is in conjunction with the on-campus salute to Talley, who is being honored on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the LSU game for his selection into the National Football Foundation’s College Hall of Fame.
“The Mountaineer family is extremely proud of Darryl Talley’s accomplishments and want to recognize him for his selection to the College Football Hall of Fame,” said Dale Wolfley, Director of the WVU Varsity Club. “Along with Athletic Director Oliver Luck, the WVU Varsity Club and the Mountaineer Athletic Club have put together a great lineup of events to pay tribute and honor one of the best football players to ever play at WVU.”
Tickets are $50 for individuals and $1,000 and $1,500 for table sponsorships. The deadline for purchasing tickets is Tuesday, Sept. 20 at noon. Please contact the Mountaineer Athletic Club to reserve tickets at 800-433-2072.
The 12th Mountaineer to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, 1982 consensus All-American Darryl Talley was one of the most dominant defenders in West Virginia University and Buffalo Bills history. A four-year starter at linebacker for the Mountaineers from 1979-82, Talley amassed 484 career tackles – the most by any WVU player when his playing career ended.
His five tackles for loss in 1980 versus Penn State still stand as a WVU single-game record. For his career, Talley had 282 unassisted tackles , 202 assisted tackles, 28 tackles for loss and 19 quarterback sacks from 1979-82.
The native of East Cleveland, Ohio, went on to stardom in Buffalo as a starter for 12 outstanding seasons at linebacker from 1983-94, never missing a game while playing for the Bills. Talley is the Bills’ all-time leading tackler with 1,137 career takedowns He also recorded 38 ½ sacks and 11 interceptions as a Bill. Talley spent the 1995 campaign with the Atlanta Falcons and played one more year with the Minnesota Vikings in 1996 before retiring.
