Throughout the summer I’ve been tweeting about Dana Holgorsen, about the WVU football program at large and about the Friends of Coal Bowl matchup in particular.
For those who missed them the first time around, I’ve assembled some of those tweets for this column – thrown together with all the smooth flow of a ransom note.
So as we inch closer to Sunday’s highly anticipated opener, fasten your seatbelts and check out some of my observations listed below, coming your way at an estimated speed of 140 characters each:
- Neither the Mountaineers (35-0 in 2001) nor the Herd (42-0 in 2000) have been shutout in the last 9 seasons.
- WVU is 26-4-1 in home openers at MF. Marshall, meanwhile, hasn't won a road opener since a 13-10 victory at Clemson in 1999.
- In its last FIVE road openers Marshall has been outscored by an avg of 44-9 and outgained by an average of 489 yards to 262.
- Overall the Herd has lost 11 straight road openers: OSU (2x), VT (2x), Wisc, Miami, WVU, UCF, Tenn, UF & Mich St. The avg. score: 39-15.
- The 2011 "Friends of Coal Bowl" will feature 2 of nation's top 3 returning sack leaders: WVU's Bruce Irvin (14 sacks) & MU's Vinny Curry (12).
- In fact, with bookends Bruce Irvin (No. 1 among returning sack leaders) & Julian Miller, WVU returns 2 of the nation's Top 15 sack artists.
- In addition to his 12 sacks in 2010, Marshall's Vinny Curry recorded more tackles (94) than any D-lineman in college football.
- Only two teams (Memphis & Buffalo) managed fewer Rushing TDs than the seven scored by Marshall last year.
- Marshall returns 4 starters in the secondary, but MU has struggled extensively vs. the pass...2010: 94th; 2009: 90th; 2008: 98th; 2007: 100th
- WVU QBs have thrown for 300+ yards 28 times in program history. Holgorsen’s QBs have hit that total 28 times in their last 35 games.
- Want consistency? Holgorsen's 2010 Oklahoma St. offense scored in 49/52 quarters, including at least one TD in 41 of those quarters.
- The most plays run in one FBS game last yr: 107 by Oklahoma. 2nd most: 106 by Tex A&M. Both came against Ok State. Casteel is rolling up his sleeves.
- Avg. score of the 11 losses suffered by Holgorsen-led offenses the last 3 yrs was 44-33. In 6 of those losses the opposition scored 47+ pts.
- In his last three seasons as an OC (Ok. State & Houst) Dana Holgorsen's teams posted a record of 29-11, winning by an avg. score of 42-29.
- In 6 years (78 gms) as an OC, Holgorsen's teams scored 50+ at least twice each season and overall averaged 40.0 Points Per Game.
- West Virginia is 44-6 in its last 50 games at Mountaineer Field. Marshall is 13-37 is its last 50 regular season road games.
- Holgorsen's last 5 openers...He's faced Pass D's ranked 110th, 116th, 85th, 100th & 104th. Result: 23 TD passes vs 1 int. Marshall is 94th.
- In 6 years as an OC, Holgorsen AVERAGED 50 throws/game (49.94).
- For those scoring at home, Holgorsen's offenses threw for 500+ yards 13 times in his 6 years as an OC, posting a 9-4 record in those games.

- With a high of 770 vs Sam Houston St in 2005, Holgorsen's offenses have produced at least 1 game of 700+ yards in 5 of his 6 years as an OC.
- Casteel’s 2010 WVU defense held five different offenses to their LOWEST yardage output of the year including CCU, Maryland, LSU, USF & UL.
- Holgorsen's 2010 Ok. St offense victimized 5 different D's w/their highest yardage total all season including Tulsa, ULL, Neb, Baylor & Texas.
- Holgorsen system allows him to win the traditional way (30+ runs) but also to win A LOT more than most do when throwing 50+ times…
- As an OC Holgorsen posted a W-L record of 19-13 when his offenses threw 50+ times while going 26-2 when his teams ran the ball 30+ times.
- In 3 years as co-OC at Tex Tech, Holgorsen's off. had just 2 games w/30+ rushes. In the 3 years since, he’s had 26 games w/30+ rushes.
- The FEWEST passes a Holgorsen-coordinated offense has attempted in a game: 33 (2008 w/Houston). The MOST: 76 (2009 w/Houston).
- The FEWEST yards a Holgorsen-coordinated offense has thrown for in a season: 4,496 last yr at Oklahoma State. The WVU team record is 3,700.
- Holgorsen’s offenses have scored 528 or more points each of the last 4 yrs.
- Holgorsen's offenses have finished ranked 3rd, 1st, 2nd (twice) and 6th (twice) in yardage and he's never finished below 13th in scoring.
- Holgorsen has gained over 5,800 yds each year as a D1 coordinator, with a high of 7,887 at Houston in 2009 (6,072 passing & 1,815 rushing).
- Holgorsen's offenses have a string of 63 straight gms with a TD pass. Last time a Holg Off. was held w/out one? A 12-3 loss to TCU in 2006.
- Holgorsen's offense produced at least one pass catcher w/10 or more TD grabs in each of his 6 seasons as a coordinator. WVU season record? Twelve.
- In 6 season openers as an OC Holgorsen's QBs avg’d 420 yards with 27 total TD passes against JUST ONE INTERCEPTION in 295 overall attempts.
- The RB-by-committee-until-one-emerges approach...Holg has done it b4. At UH in '08 Bryce Beall (1,247) didn't break out until a 133-yd game in week 5.
- Geno needs 5,082 yds to break Bulger's career record. Could it happen in 2011? DH has produced two 5,600+ yd passers in last 4 yrs.
- WVU's single game record for passing yards is 429. QBs under Holgorsen as an OC topped that mark 23 times in past 6 yrs, w/a high of 646.
- Kickers benefit from Holgorsen's scoring machine too. Last yr Ok State's Dan Bailey scored 149 pts, 2 more than Ira Rodgers' WVU season record set in 1919.
And,
- Oklahoma State's Bailey (the Groza Award winner) hit 27-of-31 FG attempts to help Holgorsen's cause, including 11-of-13 from 40+ (Long 52).
