Senior Ruben Garrido models the special “throwback uniform” the men’s soccer team will be wearing this weekend to commemorate the 50th anniversary of men’s soccer at West Virginia University.
This is a replica of the 1966 uniform worn by the Mountaineers, who went 13-2 that season and won the Southern Conference championship.
WVU also qualified for the NCAA tournament that year - the school’s first-ever trip to the national tournament and one of five NCAA appearances made by the Mountaineers during an eight-year period.
This year’s WVU team is currently ranked 10th in the country by Soccer America after knocking off Virginia in the 2011 season opener and posting a strong performance at fourth-ranked Maryland earlier this week.
West Virginia will take on Binghamton, coached by former Mountaineer Paul Marco, this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and then faces Old Dominion on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Many former Mountaineer players, coaches and administrators will be in town this weekend to take part in the 50th anniversary celebration of WVU soccer.
Pictures of the throwback uniform can be viewed on men's soccer's official Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/wvumenssoccer.
