MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A program-best 10 West Virginia University gymnasts were named Scholastic All-Americans for the 2010-11 academic year, as announced yesterday by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W).
The 10 honorees matches a school record first established in 2007. Nine Mountaineers were honored in 2010, and in total, 87 gymnasts have been recognized since 1987.
As a team, WVU ranked No. 31 overall, the second-best ranking of any East Atlantic Gymnastics League squad, with a cumulative team grade point average (GPA) of 3.3468.
“I’m very pleased with the team’s success in the classroom last season,” says first-year coach Jason Butts. “Ten honorees is a great achievement, and it’s always nice to match program-best numbers.
“Academic success is one more example of how dedicated this team is to being one of the top gymnastics programs in the country. We will constantly strive to better this program in the classroom and in the competition arena.”
First-year gymnast Marina Galante (pre-sport psychology) was one of 71 student-athletes to earn the honor with a 4.0 GPA.
Graduate Stephanie Keaton (fashion design) scored her fourth straight career honor, becoming the eighth Mountaineer to earn four or more career awards.
A trio of Mountaineers earned their second career honors – senior Tina Maloney (nursing), and juniors Arlene Hathaway (elementary education) and Kaylyn Millick (nursing). Millick was awarded her first NACGC/W Scholastic All-American award at Eastern Michigan in 2010.
In addition to Galante, five Mountaineers also earned their first award – graduates Naja Johnson (multidisciplinary studies) and Emily Kerwin (graphic design), senior Nicole Roach (elementary education) and sophomores Bethany Yurko (design studies) and Hope Sloanhoffer (pre-exercise physiology).
Scholastic All-America status is awarded as a result of GPAs of 3.5 or better for the year.
The NACGC/W is the national association for women’s collegiate gymnastics coaches. The association seeks to actively manage and develop the sport of women’s gymnastics at the collegiate level and works with the NCAA and USA Gymnastics in order to provide the best possible experience for student-athletes.
