MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team received its first ranking of the 2011 season Tuesday. The Mountaineers were tabbed No. 13 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll.
Four WVU opponents are ranked in the NSCAA poll: Ohio State (No. 8), Virginia (No. 10), Marquette (No. 12) and Georgetown (No. 22). Today’s poll is the first of 13 rankings throughout the season by the NSCAA.
West Virginia will play two exhibition matches, first traveling to sixth-ranked Maryland tomorrow for a 6 p.m. contest. WVU’s final tune-up is slated for Aug. 13 against Central Michigan at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
“We are looking forward to playing a very good Maryland team,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown on Wednesday’s meeting with the Terps. “The exhibition will serve as a good measuring stick on the progress made thus far in preseason and to where we need to be for our season opener.”
The Mountaineers will continue preseason training until their season opener at Virginia on Aug. 19.
