MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball coach Jill Kramer announces the addition of three student-athletes to the 2011 class.
Anke de Jong (Groningen, Netherlands) and Carlijn Oosterlaken (Tubbergen, Netherlands) have signed a national letter of intent while Kiara Gilbert (Irvington, N.J.) joins the Mountaineers after spending one season with UNC-Charlotte.
“We are excited for all three of them to join us,” Kramer says. “We have been awaiting their arrival for a long time and we are happy that they are here in Morgantown.”
DeJong, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter comes in after leading Zernike College, Haren to a first-place finish at the MJT Doezum in 2007. DeJong also led her team to an eighth place finish in the B-league competition in 2011.
“Anke is going to come in as a very seasoned and mature player,” Kramer says. “She comes from a volleyball family. Her dad played on the men’s national team for the Netherlands and her mom played professionally so she grew up around the sport. She will be a big threat on the outside for us. She has nice size and a good touch on the ball.”
Oosterlaken also looks to add more depth to the outside hitter position for the Mountaineers. As a member of club Dynamo Tubbergen, Oosterlaken helped lead her team to four straight National Championships. Oosterlaken also played for the U-18 and U-20 Woman’s National Teams which won the B-league championship in 2010.
“Carlijn was a member of the woman’s junior national team for the Netherlands and will be another force for us on the outside,” Kramer says. “She has a lot of international experience which will be helpful and she is a great six rotation player.”
Gilbert, a 6-foot middle blocker, joins the Mountaineers as a transfer from UNC-Charlotte where she redshirted the 2010 season. The Irvington, N.J., native was named first team all-conference and all-county her senior year at Science Park High. Gilbert also finished the 2009 season with 157 blocks and 312 kills which ranked her first and second, respectively, among players in New Jersey.
“Kiki redshirted last year at UNC-Charlotte and has played both middle and right side,” Kramer says. “She will look to add depth in the middle for us and challenge Evyn (McCoy) and Abby (Monson) for playing time immediately.”
The three new additions join McCoy (Clare, Ill, Sycamore High), Halle Kearney (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat High) and Courtney Robison (Shepherdsville, Ky, Assumption High) in the 2011 incoming class.
