Women's 2011-12 Hoop Schedule Released

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Oliver Luck and the BIG EAST have announced the 2011-12 women’s basketball schedule today.
The lineup includes 29 overall games with 17 held at the WVU Coliseum and three games on national television. The BIG EAST Conference is coming off a record-setting season as nine total league members advanced to postseason play, including national runner-up Notre Dame. Conference rival Pitt will again be WVU’s only home-and-home series. In addition to hosting Pitt, other BIG EAST teams to play in the WVU Coliseum this season include DePaul, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Villanova.
“The BIG EAST Conference is arguably the toughest basketball conference in the nation and I have no doubt coach (Mike) Carey and his team will continue to rise to the occasion,” Luck says.
“A majority of this year’s games will be at home in the WVU Coliseum and we’re looking forward to the home-court atmosphere,” Carey says. “The BIG EAST always presents a challenge and last year many teams got a taste of postseason competition so I know they will be coming into this season just as hungry.”
The Mountaineers will play host to Wheeling Jesuit on Nov. 2 for an exhibition game, and will open the regular season with three consecutive home games beginning on Nov. 11 with Youngstown State. Behind the Penguins, WVU will face St. Bonaventure and North Carolina Central.
WVU’s first road trip is to the Woodland Hills Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Basketball Classic hosted by Cal State Northridge at The Matadome in Northridge, Calif. WVU will open the tournament on Nov. 25 against Pac-10 competitor UCLA and will face either Cal State Northridge or Colgate in a consolation game or championship game the following day.
“Playing UCLA will be an early test for us,” Carey says. “Our Thanksgiving tournaments are usually a good test of where we stand before we start conference competition.”
The women’s basketball team will then return to Morgantown for a pair of non-conference games with LaSalle and Boston, before opening BIG EAST play in Syracuse, N.Y., as it takes on the Orange on Dec. 7. WVU will close out the week on Dec. 10 with a game against North Florida in the WVU Coliseum.
One week later, the Mountaineers will travel up to Pittsburgh, Pa., for a matchup with Duquesne in the Palumbo Center before returning home to close out the month of December with three non-conference games against Mount St. Mary’s, Bucknell and a New Year’s Eve game against Elon.
WVU travels to defending BIG EAST Champion Connecticut on Jan. 4 and will stay in conference play for three more games before taking on Marshall in the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic on Jan. 17 for its final non-conference game of the season.
Following the Thundering Herd, the Mountaineers travel to Pitt for its first matchup of the home-and-home series on Jan. 21, which will air live on the BIG EAST Network.
The Mountaineers will first appear on national television on Feb. 12 as they face 2011 NCAA national runner-up Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind. The game is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
On Feb. 21, WVU will play at St. John’s with game time slated for 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. WVU will play host to the Panthers in the Backyard Brawl for the final home game of the regular-season on Feb. 27. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. in Morgantown and will air live on CBS Sports Network.
The 2012 BIG EAST Championship is set for March 2-6 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
The Mountaineers will open the 2011-12 season with their first official practice on Oct. 3.
