MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 25 West Virginia women’s soccer team plays host to No. 18 Ohio State on Thursday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The match with the Buckeyes is a “Dollar Night” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Cola products available for purchase for just one dollar each. It’s also a “Gold Rush” night where fans who wear the official 2011 WVU fan shirt can enter for a chance to win a year’s supply of Papa John's pizza.
“We are looking forward to coming home and playing in front of our fans,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “I expect a large crowd to help support us against a very good Ohio State team.”
WVU is coming off a 3-0 shutout win against George Mason on Aug. 28 with goals from Drea Barklage, Frances Silva and Chelsey Corroto. All seven goals this season have been scored by a different Mountaineer on the roster.
The Mountaineers are 3-3-1 all-time against the Buckeyes, including a 1-1-1 mark in the last three meetings. A year ago, OSU scored three unanswered goals in a 3-1 win in Columbus. Ohio State is the third and final Big Ten opponent on WVU’s schedule.
“It’s always a battle against Ohio State and they are coming off a final four season,” says Izzo-Brown. “They return most of their starters who experienced that NCAA run and it should be an exciting match tomorrow night.”
Lori Walker, now in her 15th season, has led the Buckeyes to six NCAA tournaments and two Big Ten tournament titles. Ohio State returns eight starters from its 2010 College Cup squad that also won a Big Ten regular-season championship. The Buckeyes are coming off a 2-1 win over Wright State on Aug. 28.
