MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With the WVU Nike Classic presented by Jersey’s Subs slated to begin this Friday, West Virginia officials are planning several promotional days this fall for the No. 10 Mountaineer men’s soccer team.
The season opener against Binghamton on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m., will kickoff the 50th anniversary celebration as WVU men’s soccer alumni come back on campus for a reunion. As part of the celebration, the team will wear replica jerseys of the 1966 Mountaineer men’s soccer squad that went 13-2 and were the Southern Conference champions. There will also be a firework display after the National Anthem and the game has been designated as “Poster Night” with free schedule posters featuring Nick Claudio, Zack Claudio and Yale Tiley available for fans.
On Sunday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m., the Mountaineer men will finish the WVU Nike Classic presented by Jersey’s Subs with a match against Old Dominion. Admission will be free courtesy of United Bank.
The first of three “Dollar Days” will occur on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. when the Mountaineers take on Richmond. All tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas will be available for just one dollar each. The other two “Dollar Days” are on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2:30 p.m., against USF and Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m., against Connecticut. The USF match will be nationally broadcasted by CBS Sports Network.
The Richmond game has also been designated as a Gold Rush, where fans are encouraged to wear the official 2011 WVU fan shirt to the game for a chance to win a WVU prize pack. Area youth soccer teams are invited to attend that game as well as part of a celebration of US Youth Soccer Month.
Friday, Oct. 21 will be “Senior Night” with all senior players being recognized prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff against Providence. The game will be nationally broadcasted by Fox Soccer Channel.
