Men's Soccer: WVU Cracks Top 10

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team is ranked No. 10 in the Soccer America poll released yesterday. WVU holds a No. 12 ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll released today.
The No. 10 ranking by Soccer America is the highest the Mountaineers have been ranked since 2007 when WVU was No. 8 for the week of Sept. 24.
WVU opened the season with a thrilling 1-0 victory over then-ranked No. 11 Virginia. Junior Eric Schoenle scored the game-winning goal and was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week and College Soccer News Team of the Week, as well as being named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
The Mountaineers then fell 3-1 to No. 4 Maryland on Monday evening. West Virginia took an early 1-0 lead on freshman Andy Bevin’s first career goal in the seventh minute of play.
WVU returns to action this weekend when it hosts the WVU Nike Classic presented by Jersey’s Subs. The Mountaineers will face Binghamton on Friday, Sept. 2, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a match with Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. The weekend will also serve host to the 50th anniversary celebration of WVU men’s soccer.
