MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Six members of the West Virginia University swimming team had improving performances yesterday on day one of the 2011 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Palo Alto, Calif.
Junior Rachael Burnett advanced to the “C” finals in the 400 free and took 26th (4:17.27), after finishing 25th (4:14.70) in the preliminary swim.
Junior Breanna McCann had a career-best swim in the 200 IM, finishing 83rd (2:20.38). Junior Jake Querciagrossa also had a career-best swim in the 400 IM, taking 92nd (4:34.50).
“WVU swimming got off to a great start to our nationals,” coach Vic Riggs said. “Breanna got us going with a lifetime best time in the 200 IM just under a second off an Olympic Trials cut. Rachael swam next with a seven second drop in her 400 free and earned her first final swim at this level. Jake then swam a best time by five seconds in his 400 IM, again just off the National cut.”
The 400 free relay team of senior Brad Eichenseener, sophomores Tim Squires and Peter Murto and Querciagrossa finished 38th (3:32.59) in the final race of the evening.
Individuals will be back in action on Wednesday morning with sophomore Danielle Smith swimming in the 100 back and Burnett swimming in the 200 free. Senior Taylor Camp will be representing WVU in the 200 fly, while swimming for Nashville Aquatics.
