Volleyball: WVU Drops 3-1 Decision to Towson

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell in its fourth match of the year to Towson 3-1 (22-25, 25-12, 23-25, 20-25) today at the WVU Coliseum.
After losing the first set, the Mountaineers (1-3) dominated set two before falling in the next two to the Tigers (2-1).
Down 8-5 in set one, the Mountaineers came back with kills from senior outside hitter Kylie Armbruster and freshman middle blocker Evyn McCoy and forced Towson to commit two straight hitting errors to take the lead 9-8. Four more lead changes occurred before the Tigers pulled ahead and ended the set on a WVU hitting error.
With Towson having the advantage, the Mountaineers stormed out to a 19-8 lead with Armbruster leading the way with four kills and one service ace. The Tigers had no chance in the set as WVU capitalized on hitting errors to take the set 25-12.
After trading points throughout the whole third set, WVU took the lead at 20-19 with a kill and two blocks from McCoy. The Tigers responded with kills from Katy Buck and I’ishah Keliikoa before senior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky tied the match at 23. The Mountaineers could not close out the match and lost 25-23.
The Tigers used their 2-1 set lead to gain control and finish the match in four sets.
The Mountaineers return to action at 7 p.m. tonight at the WVU Coliseum where they will take on Robert Morris in the final match of the WVU Volleyball Mountaineer Invitational.
