August 20, 2011 10:47 AM | General
West Virginia will begin the 2011 football season ranked 24th in the Associated Press preseason Top 25, released Saturday morning.
It is the 15th time in school history the Mountaineers will begin a year ranked in the AP poll, and the seventh since 1998. Dana Holgorsen also becomes the third WVU coach in school history to start his rookie season with the Mountaineers in the rankings, joining Bobby Bowden in 1970 (20th) and Bill
Stewart (8th) in 2008.
West Virginia, 9-4 last year, is the only Big East team in this year’s preseason AP poll. Pitt was the only other Big East program to receive votes.
The Mountaineers open the 2011 campaign on Sunday, Sept. 4, at Milan Puskar Stadium against Marshall in the Friends of Coal Bowl. Season tickets, single-game tickets and mini-season tickets are still available through the Mountaineer Ticket Office by calling toll-free 1-800-WVU GAME or by logging onto WVUGAME.com.
