GIVING BACK

Like the rest of us, Quincy Wilson was touched when he watched the CBS feature that ran on Chris Henry last Thanksgiving and his mother Carolyn Henry Glaspy’s courageous decision to donate her son’s organs to four different people after the former standout Mountaineer wide receiver tragically died in December, 2009.

Quincy thought one good deed deserved another, so he got on the telephone with WVU teammate Grant Wiley last January to see what they could do for Henry’s family. What they came up with was a free football clinic for area youths and a benefit basketball game to help the Henry family (Chris has three small children).

“I said, ‘Let’s do something simple like have a football camp and grab some guys and play a basketball game.’ That’s kind of how the idea started rolling,” said Wilson.

So Wilson got on his cell phone and started calling all of his teammates. The guys he didn’t have numbers for he looked up on Facebook. The response was overwhelming.

Pat White, Steve Slaton, Major Harris, Adam Jones, Owen Schmitt, Rasheed Marshall, Reed Williams, Ryan Mundy and Pat McAfee are just a handful of the former players committed to be in Morgantown on Tuesday, July 12 to either work the free football clinic at Pro Performance Center or play in the celebrity basketball game at Morgantown High later that evening.

“I just told people to come. If they want to play basketball, that’s great,” Wilson said. “I’ve got people coming to work the free clinic. I just reached out to everybody and asked them to come, and once they get here we will handle it from there.”

More importantly, Wilson said he was able to get the blessing of Henry’s family. Some of his family members will be at the basketball game next Tuesday night.

“I wanted to get Chris’ mom on board and make sure we had some of his family members here,” Wilson explained. “She was tickled that we wanted to do anything.”

Wilson has secured sponsorships to help offset some of the costs, including the usage of Pro Performance Center for the clinic and the Morgantown High gym for the basketball game.

“It will be a great way to get kids over to Pro Performance Center to see all of the great facilities they have over there,” Wilson said. “And all we have to pay for is the cleanup at Morgantown High after the basketball game.”

The Morgantown High band will run the concession stand at the basketball game and will use that as a fundraiser, says Wilson. In addition to the game, there will also be a silent auction and Wilson is hopeful of being able to raise several thousand dollars for the Henry family.

“One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to his family for whatever they choose to do with it,” Wilson said. “We will present them with a check at halftime.”

Wilson said he wanted to start things off slowly with something simple, but he said depending upon the response they get from this year’s inaugural event, he is willing to consider taking this on the road to different cities throughout the state in the future.

“I wanted to start this off easy but eventually we could do events in Martinsburg or Charleston or wherever,” Wilson said. “I went through the whole process of registering this as a charity and now this is where we are at.”

Registration for the free clinic for kids ages 7-14 begins at 8 a.m. Wilson said he plans on breaking the kids up into different groups to give them an opportunity to work on different aspects of their game.

“We will do a warm up and then we will do a little speed stuff. After that we will do an individual period like a regular practice,” Wilson said. “We will do running back drills, the receivers will catch the ball and the quarterbacks will throw. Then after we break from lunch, the kids working on offense will switch to defense and vice versa.

“We want to make it fun for the kids; I don’t want it to be stagnant. I want everyone staying active, interacting and having a good time,” he added.

Later that evening, the celebrity basketball game will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can only be purchased at the gate.
