We may still be in the middle of the summer, but things are about to pick up for the Mountaineers starting this week. Members of the West Virginia University athletic staff are in Newport, R.I. this weekend for Big East meetings in advance of Tuesday morning’s football media day at the Hotel Viking.
Coach Dana Holgorsen and West Virginia players Geno Smith, Keith Tandy and Bruce Irvin will be available to take questions from media members about the upcoming 2011 season on Tuesday; on Monday, players, coaches and athletic staff members will take part in the annual clambake that has become a Big East tradition.
The conference will carry press day activities live and exclusively for the first time on the Big East Digital Network beginning with analysis of the preseason coaches’ poll, which will be revealed on Tuesday morning.
On Thursday, WVU players will report for fall training camp with the first official practice taking place on Friday, Aug. 4.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineer men’s and women’s basketball teams resume practice for their respective European tours in August. The WVU men will have two media sessions before departing for Italy on Monday, Aug. 8, for its 13-day trip that ends Aug. 21.
The Mountaineer women will also have a pair of media sessions next week before their departure, also on Aug. 8. The women will play Italian and Dutch club teams during its 10-day tour.
