REPORT:DEVINE TO SIGN WITH FALCONS
July 26, 2011 10:58 AM | General
Noel Devine will sign a rookie free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons this morning, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
In 2010, Devine led West Virginia in rushing with 934 yards and also added 1,192 yards from scrimmage, the third straight year he produced more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage.
Devine’s best year came in 2009 when he rushed for 1,465 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. He also ran for 1,289 yards and scored four touchdowns as a sophomore in 2008.
Devine appeared headed for another 1,000-yard season after producing 100-yard rushing efforts in wins against Coastal Carolina, Marshall and Maryland, but a turf toe injury sustained against LSU and later an ankle injury against Louisville severely limited his production.
Devine reached the 100-yard mark just one more time against Syracuse, and finished the season with just four carries for 24 yards against Pitt, 13 carries for 31 yards against Rutgers and eight carries for 50 yards against NC State in the Champs Sports Bowl.
He participated in the 2011 Senior Bowl and scored a touchdown in that game.
The Ft. Myers, Fla., resident established the school record for all-purpose yardage (5,761) and is third on the school’s all-time rushing list with 4,315 yards.
Last spring, West Virginia had four players taken in the NFL draft: CB Brandon Hogan (4th, Carolina Panthers), S Robert Sands (5th, Cincinnati Bengals), LB JT Thomas (6th, Chicago Bears) and DT Chris Neild (7th, Washington Redskins).
Other rookie free agent candidates include safety Sidney Glover, wide receiver Jock Sanders, defensive tackle Scooter Berry and linebacker Anthony Leonard.
Free Agent Update: As of this afternoon, according to the News-Press, Devine has not signed with the Falcons and remains a free agent. Also, Leonard has signed with the New England Patriots, according to his Twitter feed, and Glover has signed with the Buffalo Bills, according to the My Valley Sports.
