Baseball: Summer Update #3

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Throughout the summer, MSNsportsNET.com will bring fans weekly updates of current Mountaineers competing in the numerous summer baseball leagues around the country. Fans can also access information on former Mountaineers playing in Major League Baseball and its minor league affiliates.
Summer Collegiate League
Outfielder Chris Rasky (Butler BlueSox – Prospect League) has played in 26 games and currently has a .205 batting average with 12 runs, 17 hits, seven doubles and seven RBIs. Last week, Rasky batted 2-for-14 (.143) with four runs, one double and one RBI.
Outfielder Tyler Steele-Worsham (Silver Spring Takoma Thunderbolts – Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League) has played in 16 games with three runs, nine hits, two doubles and five RBIs. Last week, Steele-Worsham batted 2-for-12 (.167) with one double and one RBI.
Pitcher Zach Bargeron and first baseman L.K. Thompson are playing for the Monmouth Monarchs of the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League. Bargeron has played in seven games, pitching 12.1 innings and allowing no runs on three hits. He has also struck out 17 batters. Thompson has played in 16 games batting .293 with five runs, 12 hits, two doubles, one home run and eight RBIs.
Pitcher Jared Hill (Grand Lake Mariners – Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League) has seen action in seven games, pitching 14.1 innings with a 3.14 ERA. Last week, Hill pitched 8.2 innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits, striking out seven.
Pitcher Ryan Tezak (Forest City Owls – Coastal Plain League) has pitched in eight games and 11 innings, allowing six hits, five runs and has struck out 12.
T.J. Kuban (New Market Rebels), Ryan McBroom (Haymarket Senators) and Brady Wilson (Winchester Royals) are all playing in the Valley Baseball League.
Kuban currently has a .276 batting average in 29 games with two home runs, 23 RBIs, 19 runs and eight doubles. Last week, Kuban batted 5-for-15 (.333) with two runs, one home run and three RBIs.
McBroom has a batting average of .240 in 24 games with 18 runs, five doubles, four home runs and 16 RBIs. In action last week, McBroom was 3-for-17 (.176).
Wilson is batting .269 in 28 games with 25 runs, five doubles, three triples, two home runs, 18 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. Wilson was also named to the all-star team and batted 2-for-3 with one RBI and a stolen base in that game. Last week, Wilson went 5-for-23 (.217) with five runs, one double, one triple, one home run, three RBIs and one stolen base.
West Virginia in the Minors
After leading Single-A in most offensive categories, Jedd Gyorko was advanced to Double-A San Antonio in the San Diego Padres organization. The Morgantown native has quickly made his presence known, batting 9-for-24 (.375) in his first six games. Gyorko has eight runs, two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs. Gyorko finished his Single-A campaign with a .365 average, 78 runs, 35 doubles, two home runs, 18 home runs and 74 RBIs. He was also named a California League Mid-Season All-Star and a Baseball America Top 50 Midseason Prospect.
Playing alongside Gyorko at San Antonio in the Padres organization is infielder Vince Belnome. Belnome is in his third year of minor league ball and is currently batting .322 with 48 runs, 78 hits, 18 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs and 53 RBIs. Belnome went on the disabled list on June 24 with an abdominal strain and played his first game on July 10, in a pinch-hitting role. Belnome was named a Texas League Mid-Season All-Star.
Infielder Tyler Kuhn also earned a call-up, now playing for the Charlotte Knights (Class AAA) of the Chicago White Sox. In his first week, Kuhn finished 3-for-24 (.125) with one RBI. Kuhn left Double-A with the highest batting average (.366), while also finishing with 44 runs, 24 doubles, six triples, one home run and 46 RBIs. Kuhn was named a Southern League Mid-Season All-Star.
Former shortstop Grant Buckner has now played in 17 games with the Bristol White Sox (Class A) of the Chicago White Sox organization. Buckner is batting .261 with 13 runs, three doubles, one home run and nine RBIs. Last week, Buckner batted 8-for-30 (.267) with six runs, two doubles and four RBIs.
Former catcher Tobias Streich is in his third minor league season and playing for the Beloit Snappers (Class A) of the Minnesota Twins. Streich is batting .226 with 20 runs, 28 hits, five doubles, one triple, three home runs and 12 RBIs. In action last week, Streich went 3-for-13 (.231) with two runs, one home run and two RBIs.
Morgantown native Andy Altemus is currently pitching in extended spring training of the San Francisco Giants in Arizona.
West Virginia in the Majors
After converting from catcher to pitcher, Morgantown native David Carpenter was called up to the Houston Astros on June 30 and has pitched in four games (3.1 innings), allowing just one hit and striking out four.
Previously, Carpenter was playing for the Oklahoma City RedHawks (Class AAA) and had 19 consecutive scoreless innings pitched.
