MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Despite a heroic effort at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., WVU senior Chelsea Carrier’s run came to an end after competing in the semifinals of the 100-meter hurdles Sunday afternoon.
The Buckhannon, W. Va., native ran the event in 13.06 seconds to finish in 16th place among the nation’s best hurdle runners. Carrier qualified for the semifinals Saturday afternoon by placing 15th in the preliminaries with a personal-best mark of 12.96 seconds, eclipsing her previous record of 12.97.
“It was a great meet and a great year for Chelsea,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “It was a wonderful note to end on. She will emerge from this meet knowing exactly what to expect next year at the Olympic trials.”
The top three finalists, Kellie Wells (12.50), Danielle Carruthers (12.59) and Dawn Harper (12.65), will represent the United States at the IAAF World Championships Aug. 27 – Sept. 4 in Daegu, South Korea.
This past outdoor track season, Carrier earned two All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the heptathlon and 100-meter hurdles. Following record-breaking performances at the NCAA East Regional, she was named the Mid-Atlantic Women’s Field Athlete of the Year for the second time of her career.
At the BIG EAST Championships, she came in first place in the 100-meter hurdles and became the first Mountaineer to win a league title in the long jump. She also earned the second-best collegiate score of the year in the heptathlon with 5,927 points at the Texas Relays.
