MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Following a successful run at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships two weeks ago, WVU senior Chelsea Carrier set a personal-best mark in the 100-meter hurdles today at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The Buckhannon, W. Va., native ran the event in 12.96 seconds, beating her previous mark of 12.97 set at the Jesse Owens Classic in April. With the finish, Carrier qualifies for the semifinals, which will take place Sunday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. ET. The finals will occur at 5:37 p.m. ET Sunday evening. The top three finalists in each event will represent Team USA at the IAAF World Championships Aug. 27 - Sept. 4 in Daegu, South Korea.
“Today was a big step in Chelsea’s career,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “Competing against the future Olympic team is an amazing opportunity. After the NCAA Championships, she felt she had something to prove. Today was a testament to her fitness and desire.”
This past outdoor track season, Carrier earned two All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the heptathlon and 100-meter hurdles. Following record-breaking performances at the NCAA East Regional, she was named the Mid-Atlantic Women’s Field Athlete of the Year for the second time of her career.
At the BIG EAST Championships, she came in first place in the 100-meter hurdles and became the first Mountaineer to win a league title in the long jump. She also earned the second-best collegiate score of the year in the heptathlon with 5,927 points at the Texas Relays.
Coverage of the 2011 USA Track and Field Championships can be viewed on television Sunday afternoon from 3:00-4:00 p.m. ET on Universal and from 5:00-6:00 p.m. ET on NBC. The event can also be viewed online at this site.
