MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia University shortstop Grant Buckner was named to the second team of the American Baseball Coaches Association all-east region team, announced by the ABCA.
Buckner finished his WVU career last month, leading the team with a .364 batting average, 48 runs, 76 hits, eight home runs and 46 RBIs in 2011. Buckner also had 14 doubles, one triple, 20 walks and was hit by 10 pitches.
“Grant had a great senior season and this honor is very well deserved,” coach Greg Van Zant said. “The ABCA divides the country into eight regions and for Grant to be named to the second team is a tremendous accomplishment for him.”
In the June Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, the Elkview, W.Va., native was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 801st pick in the 26th round. Buckner was assigned to the Bristol White Sox in Class-A.
