Baseball: WVU Falls in Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A six run seventh inning by Cincinnati led the Bearcats to a 9-4 victory over the West Virginia University baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Hawley Field in game one of a doubleheader.
The Mountaineers held a comfortable 4-0 lead to start the seventh when the Cincinnati bats came alive and recorded five hits in the inning.
Braden Kline started the Cincinnati seventh inning rally with a home run to left field. Jake Saylor and Nic Spence reached on back-to-back walks, followed by a T.J. Jones single through the left side that scored Saylor. Chris Peters and Jake Proctor hit back-to-back infield singles with Peters’ loading the bases and Proctor’s scoring Spence. Justin Glass then hit a bases clearing double to left field to bring the score to 6-4.
WVU junior right-handed starting pitcher Josh McCauley scattered just two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings pitched, including just two hits through the first six innings. Freshman righty Ryan Tezak came on in relief in the seventh inning with two men on and allowed four runs on three hits in one inning pitched.
The Mountaineers finished with four runs on 10 hits with one error, while Cincinnati scored nine runs on eight hits and no errors.
Redshirt senior Grant Buckner continued his hot streak at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, including two doubles, two runs, two RBIs and a walk. Sophomore Brady Wilson and redshirt senior Mark Dvoroznak had two hits apiece as well.
The Mountaineer offense jumped on Cincinnati starting pitcher Dan Jensen early with three-consecutive hits to start the bottom of the first. Wilson and senior Justin McDavid each singled to right, before being driven in by a double to right field by Buckner. After a ground out by redshirt senior Jeremy Gum, sophomore Chris Rasky singled up the middle to score Buckner and extend the lead to 3-0.
WVU added a fourth run in the third inning with Buckner scoring on a ground out by Rasky to first base.
Jensen allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings pitched. Jensen also struck out four. Reliever Brad Mergen earned his first win of the season with four innings of two hit pitching, while striking out three.
At the plate, Spence finished 2 for 2 with two runs, one RBI and three walks to lead the Bearcat offense.
The two squads will be back in action this evening with the second game of today’s doubleheader, before facing off in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m.
