MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – GymInfo has released its 2011 women’s gymnastics attendance figures, and West Virginia University ranks No. 22 nationally in average attendance and boasts the 15th-best single-meet mark.
“Our fans again proved this year why they are some of the best in the nation,” says coach Jason Butts. “Their unconditional support at each home meet allows this team to compete to the best of its ability. I’m very happy we were able to put forth excellent attendance numbers this season, and my goal is for us to move into the top 10 within the next few years.”
The Mountaineers averaged 1,501 fans in five home meets this season. Additionally, the squad’s 2011 home opener on Jan. 14 against Michigan State, the inaugural WVU “Beauty and the Beast” meet, drew a season-best 3,206 fans, the nation’s 15th-best single-meet mark and the third-highest attendance mark in program history.
This year’s average attendance per meet is the team’s best since 2000, when WVU averaged 1,478 fans per home meet.
The Mountaineers boasted a 6-2 record at the WVU Coliseum this season, with their only losses coming to No. 1 Florida on Feb. 20 and No. 10 Penn State on March 12. WVU concluded the 2011 season at 13-10, finished fourth at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championship and competed in its 28th NCAA Regional Championships.
