MISCHLER TO RUN RELAY

West Virginia will be sending a number of qualifiers to this weekend’s Big East outdoor track and field championships taking place at Jumbo Elliott track at Villanova University.
One of them is senior Megan Mischler, an all-conference performer for the Big East champion Mountaineer women’s soccer team. Mischler has made one of the all-conference teams for three straight years and finished third on the team in scoring in 2010.
Now she will try to earn all-conference honors in track.
Mischler ran the hurdles at Moon Area High, qualifying for the Pennsylvania state meet her senior year, and women’s track coach Sean Cleary has her slotted as the final leg on the 400-meter relay entered this weekend.
“She had a great career in soccer and now she’s with us in the 4x100,” said Cleary. “We’ve got a strategy – we’re going to bring her home. We’re hoping the first three girls can stick out there, nail their handoffs, and put her in a good spot. There is a lot of pressure on her but she’s so tough.”
Cleary said the relay has had a difficult time getting in the necessary work this spring.
“We’ve got a nice 4x100 and we’re looking for it to click,” he said. “We’ve had terrible weather this spring but if we get a little bit lucky this weekend I think we could see a scoring team.”
The 400-meter relay is the first event scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m.
