MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Seniors Chelsea Carrier and Keri Bland advanced to the national finals in the 100-meter hurdles and 1,500-meter run, respectively, this evening at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional Championships, in Bloomington, Ind.
As of this evening, seven Mountaineers will represent WVU in seven events at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships: Carrier (heptathlon and 100-meter hurdles), Bland (1,500-meter run), Meghan Mock (long jump), Kate Harrison (10,000-meter run), Sarah-Anne Brault (10,000-meter run), Katelyn Williams (high jump) and April Rotilio (400-meter run).
“After three days of competition, we are leaving as happy as we have been all week,” says coach Sean Cleary. “This group of young ladies has represented West Virginia as well as any group ever at the NCAA regional. The seven that qualified for the finals marks the most that we have ever sent to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Needless to say, all of the coaches are very proud.”
Carrier, the BIG EAST champion, won her heat and placed third overall with a time of 13.08. She finished third in yesterday’s first round with a time of 13.27.
“As expected, Chelsea regrouped after the long jump and ran her second-best time of the season to win her section,” Cleary says. “She will emerge from this competition without injury and well prepared for the national finals.”
Bland placed ninth overall with a season-best time of 4:19.82, improving upon her time of 4:22.9 in Thursday’s first round.
“Words cannot describe how proud I am of Keri,” Cleary says. “She continues to overcome a lack of proper preparation due to ongoing feet issues. Qualifying for the national final is especially gratifying.”
Sophomore Chené Townsend also competed in the 100-meter hurdles quarterfinal and placed 22nd with a personal-best time of 13.71.
“Chené had a great experience in her first regional showing,” says Cleary. “This competition should springboard her to the national finals in the upcoming years.”
A complete list of qualified athletes for the national championships, held June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa, will be announced late on May 29, 2011.
