MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team will have 12 student-athletes competing at next weekend’s NCAA East Regional meet in Bloomington, Ind., the NCAA announced yesterday.
“Coming off of a great showing at the BIG EAST Championships, we are pleased to have such a diverse group of qualifiers,” coach Sean Cleary says. “What is incredible out of this group is that all 12 have the ability to qualify for the NCAA Finals. They should have their A game next week.”
The Mountaineers are led by senior Chelsea Carrier who is set to compete in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles at the regionals, while freshman Chené Townsend will join Carrier in the hurdles and junior Meghan Mock in the long jump.
After breaking a school record and winning a conference title at the BIG EAST Championships, senior April Rotilio returns to the national stage in the 400-meter dash qualifying at No. 7.
In the distance events, All-Americans Keri Bland and Kaylyn Christopher will race in the 1,500-meter run, while Kate Harrison, Sarah-Anne Brault, Kaitlyn Gillespie and Ahna Lewis will represent WVU in the 10,000-meter run.
Senior Katelyn Williams returns for her second-straight NCAA appearance in the high jump and will be joined by sophomore Sydney Cummings.
The NCAA Regional meets serve as the preliminary rounds of the NCAA Championships. The top student-athletes in each event will move on to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
