MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a three day, nationwide audition in Orlando, former West Virginia University gymnast Amy Bieski has been admitted into the Cirque du Soleil system.
Though Bieski, a Nanticoke, Pa., native, did not sign a contract, she is now eligible for future productions.
“This is a great opportunity that not many receive, and I am honored to have been selected,” Bieski says. “I am anxious and hopeful that I will be placed in a show. I am thankful for the chance to continue to use my gymnastics and athletic skills, and I look forward to meeting so many wonderful people and traveling the nation and the world.”
Bieski capped off her four-year Mountaineer career as the 2011 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast and Senior of the Year. She also won the EAGL bars title outright at the conference championship and earned four all-league honors, bringing her career total to 17. After scoring a career best all-around score of 39.275 on Feb. 20, Bieski ended the season ranked No. 38 nationally. She also ranked in the top five in the league on vault, floor and all-around.
Bieski left the program with 1,940.6 career points, the No. 2 all-time WVU total. She also competed as an all-arounder in 48 career meets, the second-best total in program history, and ranks No. 3 all-time with 23 career scores of 39.0 or better. A NACGC/W Scholastic All-American and four-time EAGL all-Academic Team member, Bieski graduated this past weekend with a degree in speech pathology and audiology.
“We are so proud of Amy, and her success at the Cirque du Soleil tryouts is a testament to the amazing combination of athleticism and grace she posses,” says Mountaineer coach Jason Butts. “Those same attributes made her one of WVU’s most successful gymnasts ever. She is an irreplaceable member of the Mountaineer family, and I know she will prove just as essential to the Cirque organization.”
