MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s soccer coach Marlon LeBlanc has announced the addition of goalkeeper Justin Holmes to the upcoming season’s squad.
A native of Elkhart, Ind., Holmes, a transfer from New Mexico, has two years of eligibility remaining.
“We are excited to add Justin to our recruiting class,” LeBlanc said. “He was a major contributor to New Mexico’s NCAA tournament team last season and clearly has the tools to do the same here at WVU. We expect Justin to compete immediately for the starting position and he is prepared to do just that.”
At New Mexico, Holmes made 22 starts out of the 23 games he played in for the Lobos, including 17 starts as the starting goalkeeper last season. He allowed 18 goals for a 0.99 goals-against average and made 60 saves en route to a 7-5-5 record and an NCAA tournament appearance. Holmes also recorded eight shutouts, including seven in a span of eight games.
Holmes was twice named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week in 2010 after running a shutout streak to a school-record 614 minutes.
As a backup in 2009, Holmes made five starts, making 20 saves and allowing four goals for a 3-1-1 record. Holmes also recorded three shutouts.
Holmes attended high school at Elkhart Central, where he was teammates with current Mountaineer midfielder/defender Ruben Garrido and was named the 2007 Northern Indiana Soccer Player of the Year. Holmes was the goalkeeper on both the 2006 and 2007 state runner-up squads. He also has played with the Indiana Invaders of the PDL and participated in the USL/ODP national camp and select team.
“With Pat Eavenson, Paul Killian, Yale Tiley, and now Justin, we feel really good about our depth at that goalkeeper position and have complete confidence no matter which one wins the starting job,” LeBlanc said.
Holmes joins Andy Bevin (Napier, New Zealand), Nick Breitsameter (Frederick, Md.), Ryan Cain (Wellington, New Zealand), Pat Eavenson (Huntersville, N.C.), Paul Ehrenworth (Cranbury, N.J.), Greg Judge (Raleigh, N.C.), Francis Molasoko (Courdimanche, France), Ryan Morris (Freehold, N.J.), Craig Stephens (Wellington, New Zealand) and Ryan Tauss (Niskayuna, N.Y.) as addition in this year’s recruiting class.
