Women's Track: Carrier Wins Heptathlon

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Chelsea Carrier broke two school and five personal records this afternoon, on her way to capturing first place in the heptathlon at the Texas Relays in Austin.
The Buckhannon, W.Va., native took the top spot with 5,927 total points after finishing first in the 100-meter hurdles (13.04), the 200-meter dash (23.64 and the long jump (6.22 meter), while also placing third in the high jump (1.73 meters), fourth in the 800-meter run (2:18.92)seventh in the shot put (11.75) and 12th in the javelin (31.24 meters).
With the finish, Carrier broke two previous records from WVU great Pat Itanyi, including the school record in the heptathlon and the 100-meter hurdles. Itanyi set the 100-meter hurdles record in 1996 with a time of 13.20, and the record for the heptathlon in 1997 with 5,684 total points.
Carrier’s finish marks the top performance in the country so far this season.
Senior Katelyn Williams also had a good showing in the heptathlon this afternoon coming in 19th with a personal-best performance of 4,699 total points.
Freshman Chene Townsend will complete action at the Texas Relays tomorrow as she competes in the 100-meter hurdles. The rest of the WVU track team will travel to Pittsburgh on Saturday for the Bennie Benson Invitational.
