MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s soccer coach Marlon LeBlanc has announced that defender Craig Stephens has been added to the 2011 men’s soccer recruiting class.
A native of Wellington, New Zealand, Stephens becomes the tenth member of the 2011 recruiting class and third from New Zealand, joining Andy Bevin of Napier and Ryan Cain of Wellington.
"We are excited to announce the addition of Craig to our already outstanding recruiting class. Craig is an excellent central defender and he has all the tools to make an immediate impact this season,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “He has very good feet and skill on the ball, he is physically imposing with a tremendous amount of athleticism and has the character to be successful from day one. We are excited to welcome Craig to the Mountaineer family."
Nick Breitsameter (Frederick, Md.), Paul Ehrenworth (Cranbury, N.J.), Ryan Morris (Freehold, N.J.) and Ryan Tauss (Niskayuna, N.Y.), join transfers Paul Eavenson, Greg Judge and Francis Molasoko in the 2011 class.
Stephens led Wellington College from 2007-09, while captaining the squad in 2009 and helping the team to the Wellington School’s Premier League minor title. Stephens was the third-highest goal scorer at the 2009 national tournament, netting eight goals, while the team finished ninth nationally. Stephens was also named the Player of the Year and Senior Footballer of the Year for Wellington College in 2009.
Stephens also saw time in two matches for the Wellington Phoenix “A” squad and played in Wellington age group representative teams since the age of 13. He also represented New Zealand in the New Zealand Schoolboys U-15 tour to China in 2007.
West Virginia finished the 2010 season 11-8-2 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament before falling to eventual national champion Akron. The Mountaineers return 10 regular starters and 16 letterwinners in 2011. All of the team’s 34 goals in 2010 return and WVU will only lose seven of its 116 points.
The Mountaineers will be in action this weekend in spring matches with Wake Forest and Navy on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Wake Forest match is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m., while the match against Navy will begin at 7 p.m.
