Baseball: WVU Travels to Villanova

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team travels to Plymouth Meeting, Pa., for a three-game BIG EAST series with Villanova this weekend from April 29-May 1.
Friday’s game will begin at 3:15 p.m., while Saturday has a scheduled start time of 1:15 p.m. First pitch for Sunday’s series finale is set for 12:15 p.m.
West Virginia (24-16, 10-5) was last in action this past weekend with a BIG EAST home series against Seton Hall, taking two of three from the Pirates. WVU won game one (6-3) and game three (3-2), but fell in game two (5-3). The Mountaineers were schedule to have a mid-week game with Akron at Hawley Field, but it was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Redshirt senior Grant Buckner leads the team in batting with a .349 average, 33 runs, 10 doubles, six home runs and 33 RBIs. Sophomore Brady Wilson (.342), redshirt senior Jeremy Gum (.341), redshirt junior Dan DiBartolomeo (.326) and senior Justin McDavid (.300) are all batting above .300. Gum leads the team with 13 triples, while DiBartolomeo has a team-leading 36 RBIs.
Buckner and redshirt senior Mark Dvoroznak paced the team last weekend offensively with 5-for-9 series performances. Buckner also scored three runs with one double, one home run and three RBIs, while Dvoroznak scored two runs and had an RBI. Wilson went 4-for-10 with one run and two doubles.
Senior Andy Berry improved his record to 6-2 with 8.1 innings pitched on Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits. Freshman Harrison Musgrave also earned a victory with seven innings pitched, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while also striking out six. Freshman reliever Ryan Tezak made two appearances and pitched 2.2 innings, recording two saves and allowing just one hit.
Junior Josh McCauley will make his first BIG EAST start in Friday’s game. McCauley has a 1-2 record with a 3.86 earned-run average in nine appearances and two starts. Redshirt freshman Marshall Thompson is expected to start Saturday and Berry on Sunday.
Currently, the Mountaineers are fourth in the conference standings, while Villanova is tied with Georgetown for eighth place.
Villanova (15-24, 2-13) was swept by Cincinnati by last weekend, before defeating Temple (9-8) and Delaware (7-6) in mid-week games to win the Liberty Bell Classic Championship. The Wildcats have lost nine consecutive BIG EAST games and have been outscored 78-24 in those games.
Outfielder Matt Fleishman leads the team offensively, batting .331 with 22 runs, 15 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 33 RBIs. David Koczirka also is having a standout season, batting .278 with 10 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 23 RBIs.
The Villanova pitching staff has been led by Kyle McMyne (3-6), who has made 10 starts with a 5.30 ERA in 54.1 innings. McMyne has struck out 67, while walking 34. Out of the bullpen, Mike Francisco has a 1.90 ERA in 18 appearances and 23.2 innings pitched with a 1-2 record.
