WVU 33RD IN ATTENDANCE

The NCAA today released its official men’s basketball attendance figures and West Virginia finished 33rd overall with an average of 11,529 fans for its 15 home dates in 2011.
That ranks sixth among Big East schools behind No. 2 Syracuse (22,312), No. 3 Louisville (21,832), No. 11 Marquette (15,586), No. 25 Georgetown (12,675) and No. 32 Connecticut (11,569).
Also, West Virginia was the 28th-best draw in college basketball with 409,525 fans watching the Mountaineers play this year.
The Big East finished second to the Big Ten in overall average attendance. The Big Ten averaged 12,826 spectators for its 193 total games this season, while the Big East averaged 11,323 fans for its 280 total games.
This year marked the fourth consecutive season West Virginia has averaged more than 10,000 fans per game at the Coliseum and five out of the last six years. In 2010, the Mountaineers averaged a school-best 12,377 fans per game.
Prior to 2006, the last time the Mountaineers averaged more than 10,000 fans per game was during Gale Catlett’s fifth season at WVU in 1983 when West Virginia averaged10,486 fans per game.
Meanwhile, the West Virginia women finished 35th overall in attendance with an average of 3,103 fans per game, placing the Mountaineers fourth among Big East schools. Surprisingly, Louisville topped UConn in average attendance this year, the Cardinal women averaging 10,859 fans per game compared to UConn’s average of 9,496.
Louisville and No. 1-ranked Tennessee were the only two women’s programs to average more than 10,000 fans per game in 2011.
