MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Thanks to a three-run double from sophomore Chris Rasky and another stellar performance from right-handed senior Andy Berry, the West Virginia University baseball team defeated Seton Hall 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Hawley Field.
“What I was really happy with is our guys got in early and worked on our hitting and bunting before the game,” head coach Greg Van Zant said. “Coach (Pat) Sherald took all of the hitters over to the Indoor Practice Facility and set up a couple of bunting and hitting stations and the inning that we scored runs we got some big bunts down that we didn’t get down yesterday.”
Rasky came to the plate in the bottom of the third with two outs and worked the count to 3-2 before lacing a ball to left center field, where Seton Hall’s center fielder Zack Granite made a diving play, but was unable to come up with the ball, scoring redshirt senior Mark Dvoroznak, sophomore Brady Wilson and redshirt senior Grant Buckner. Dvoroznak led off with a single up the middle, while Wilson reached on sacrifice bunt that Seton Hall catcher Frank Esposito made a throwing error to first and Buckner was then intentionally walked to load the bases.
Berry finished the afternoon with 8.1 innings pitched and allowed two runs on six hits to improve to 5-2 on the season.
“Obviously I wanted to go out there and finish the game, but my pitch count was up and I gave up a hit, so I wanted to win selfishly for me, but I also want to win for the team,” Berry said.
Freshman righty Ryan Tezak came in to get the final two outs of the ninth inning and earned his fourth save, inheriting Seton Hall’s Ryan Sullivan who reached on a one-out double.
“He’s been pretty good all season,” Berry said of Tezak. “He has a really good split and his fastball has some life on it, he just locates both pitches really well.
Dvoroznak and Wilson led West Virginia at the plate with 2-for-3 performances, both scoring one run. Buckner finished 0 for 2 with one run and was intentionally walked twice. His hitless performance ends an 18-game hitting streak, tying a career high for the third-consecutive season.
The Mountaineers (24-16, 10-5) finished with three runs on five hits and no errors, while Seton Hall (17-19, 6-9) scored two runs on six hits with one error.
Seton Hall opened up the top of the first with a run on a Sean Gusrang single to right field, scoring Dale Anderson to take an early 1-0 lead.
Will Walsh then opened the top of the third with a triple to right field and was driven home on the next play by an RBI ground to shortstop from Granite to extend the lead to 2-0.
Walsh finished the afternoon with a 2-for-3 performance and one run to lead the Pirates offense.
Jon Prosinski took the loss for the Pirates in 6.1 innings, allowing zero earned runs on five hits.
West Virginia will be back in action Tuesday evening with a non-conference game against Akron at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard in Morgantown on WAJR AM-1440 and MSNsportsNET.com.
