MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Select players quotes after today’s morning practice.
Running back Matt Lindamood
On having experience and working with new guys
Right now we’re just getting the basics down and going as far as we can go. We’re not struggling at tackle, but these guys are still rookies right now. They’re getting thrown in with the No. 1s, and that’s always tough. I remember when I got thrown in with the No. 1s - your head just starts spinning. You’re nervous, you miss plays, you mess up all of the time and you think you’re never going to get it. They’re going to start getting it, and we’re going to be good.
On what they have to work on this spring
The biggest thing that we need to work on is technique. We already know how to communicate and how talk to each other. It’s not as complicated as it was last year, so now it’s just improving on technique and getting our blocks down
On changes in communication
It is basically all on me now, and there’s only a few calls I have to make. I just read the front and tell them what’s up, and we just go with it.
On the progress of the new guys
They’re awesome. They’re improving every day and getting better. They’re watching film and critiquing themselves, and we’re helping them out along the way.
Wide receiver J.D. Woods
On the frustrations during practice
I think we just need to come out more focused. When we come out focused, coach Holgorsen calms down, and we all end up laughing. We all need to stay on our man, and if we stay on our man, great things will happen
On the spring game
It’s going to be exciting because it’s the spring game. All of the jitters and the exciting feelings you have for a game are going to come into effect at the spring game. I think a lot of guys will be flying around and a lot of emotions will be flowing.
Defensive lineman Julian Miller
On being a senior
You’re so excited for that senior season, and there’s so much that you hope for and expect. I’m just fired up to play. It’s odd with all the old guys being gone, especially because I’m being asked to step into a leader type of role. I’m not used to that yet because I’m not that much of a vocal leader. I like to lead by example, so it’s definitely something new to me and a challenge I’m ready to take on.
On becoming more vocal
We have become more vocal, especially along the defensive line, and I’ve noticed that since we started winter workouts. There’s not Scooter (Berry) or (Chris) Neild to bring up the defensive line or to break it down – it is me. I’ve been here the longest and played the most, so the guys on the defensive line look up to me. I have tried to spread it on throughout the defense to other guys like Najee Goode and Keith Tandy.
On playing defensive tackle
Honestly, there’s not too much of a difference. The only difference is that you might have a tight end on your side and mostly to your strong side. Especially playing against this offense, you don’t even have a tight end to go against, so it’s not much of a difference right now. Once the season starts and we play teams that we’re actually going to play against, we’re going to get a different look.
Defensive end Bruce Irvin
On having more pressure on him from other teams
I have to work extra hard in the offseason because the BIG EAST knows who I am. I’m already expecting it.
On Julian Miller stepping up
If Julian starts having a good season, they’ll start doubling him and taking them off me again. Julian is like a brother to me, and we’re all in this together, and that’s what it’s all about.
On taking a leadership role
I wouldn’t say I have a leadership role, but when I have something to say, I say it. I let Julian, Keith Tandy and Najee Goode do all of the talking, but if I see something wrong, I say something.
On the defense’s improvements
We’re still young, and we have a whole fall camp and summer workout to get through. We really don’t have an identity yet because we’re still learning the basics and we don’t have a lot of plays started. It’s a long time from now to September 3, so we’ll be alright.
