MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
“It was a good match between two quality NCAA (tournament) programs,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We had one breakdown defensively that they took advantage of. For the most part I am pleased and saw some encouraging things out there.”
The Mountaineers took a quick 1-0 lead off the foot of forward Katie Lenz less than two minutes into the contest. Frances Silva started the play in the middle of the field by sending the ball wide to Emily Dillon. Dillon carried the ball to the end line and sent a ball on the ground in front of the net. Lenz stepped forward and one-timed the ball into the net at the back post.
In the 71st minute, the Hokies tied the match off a ball played over the top of the WVU defense. A Tech forward chased a ball down at the top of the box on the left side, cut a defender and sent a ball into the right side of the goal to even the score.
The teams played three 30-minute periods on a slick field after an early morning snowfall in Morgantown.
Virginia Tech’s best scoring chance of the first period came in the 15th minute as a Hokie midfielder sent a ball wide of the left post from the middle of the box.
In the 44th minute, WVU defender Erica Henderson got into the mix by making a run forward. Henderson received a through ball from Bri Rodriguez inside the box that drifted wide of the goal.
Lenz tried to improve on WVU’s 1-0 lead in the 67th minute on a header in front of the net. Blake Miller served a ball deep into the box where Techs’ goalkeeper swiped the ball out of the air to eliminate a scoring opportunity.
Mountaineer goalkeeper Sara Keane played well in net, including two big plays in the final five minutes. She came off her line to deny a one-on-one situation and made a diving stop to her left to keep the game at 1-1.
WVU resumes its spring season with a trip to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for a match against Central Michigan on April 9.
