MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team will travel to Fairfax Station, Va., on Sunday, April 3, to compete in the Occoquan Sprints at the Occoquan Reservoir.
WVU will be competing against several teams, including BIG EAST foe Georgetown, along with George Mason, Virginia Commonwealth, James Madison, Temple, Dayton, Loyola and Duquesne.
“We're behind where we would like to be in our overall race preparation at this time due to those lost days on the water earlier in the month,” says coach Jimmy King. “During the past week, our primary focus has been on becoming more acclimated to higher race rates in preparation for this weekend's regatta.”
The Mountaineers will have four boats competing this weekend, including the Varsity eight, Second Varsity eight, Varsity four and Novice eight boats.
WVU is set to begin racing at 10:07 a.m. with the women’s Novice 8+ ‘A’ heat, followed by the women’s Second Varsity 8+ and women’s Varsity 8+ heat 1 races at 10:14 a.m. and 10:35 a.m.
The Mountaineers will finish the preliminary races with the women’s Varsity 4+ heat 1 race, which is set for 12:27 p.m. Finals will begin following the last preliminary race.
“After two weeks of consistent water time, the crews are eager to race and see how much progress they've made,” adds King. “Our first eight boat contains the most experienced rowers and should lead the way, as they did in North Carolina. We expect our younger crew to race much better this time around.”
