MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team defeated Ohio and fell to Tennessee Saturday in the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Soccer Invitational at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
WVU forward Blake Miller netted the game-winner in a 1-0 shutout against Ohio. The Mountaineers and Bobcats met in the second game of the day, playing a 70-minute match.
The Mountaineers added a late goal from Miller in falling to the Lady Vols, 2-1, in a 90-minute match.
“We went out and competed today,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We’ll take a look at the film and use it to identify areas to improve on as we close out the spring.”
Against Ohio, Miller scored in the 59th minute off an indirect kick from the top of box, blasting a ball inside the right post.
The Mountaineers came close to doubling its lead in the 67th minute when defender Bry McCarthy sent a shot off the crossbar from just outside the box.
Tennessee built a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute by taking advantage of WVU mistake, intercepting a pass back to goalkeeper Sara Keane and finishing a 1v1 opportunity.
In the 68th minute, UT doubled its lead at 2-0 on a breakaway following a ball played over the Mountaineer defense which had pushed up field.
Miller put West Virginia on the board in the 88th minute by intercepting a pass along the Tennessee back line. She took two touches and buried a shot inside the near post.
Today’s contests were the sixth and seventh of the spring exhibition season for WVU. The matches were also the second part of WVU’s efforts this spring to raise funds for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.
The Mountaineers will present a check for the money raised this spring at a home match this fall. The WVU women’s soccer team has raised more than $60,000 over the past seven years to help fight breast cancer.
