SOUTH BEND, Ind. - In a blustery, rainy night game that featured three rain delays, the West Virginia University baseball team fell to Notre Dame, 5-2, on Friday evening at Franck Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
The game was schedule to start at 7:05 p.m., with the start being delayed 1:07 due to heavy rains. The bottom of the first featured a two minute raining delay, followed by a 53 minute rain delay.
After the final rain delay, freshman righty Corey Walter came in and pitched seven innings of relief, allowing two runs on four hits. Starting freshman left-handed pitcher Harrison Musgrave earned a no decision in 0.2 innings pitched and allowed two runs on two hits.
The win was awarded to Notre Dame starter Cole Johnson, who allowed one earned run on four hits in 6.1 innings, while striking out six. Will Hudgins earned the save, allowing one hit in 2.2 innings pitched.
Notre Dame (14-17-1, 5-6) scored five runs on six hits and West Virginia (21-15, 7-4) scored two runs on five hits. Both teams committed an error.
Redshirt senior designated hitter Jeremy Gum led West Virginia with a 1-for-2 performance, including a double and two RBIs. Gum was also hit by two pitches. Redshirt senior centerfielder Mark Dvoroznak went 2-for-4, while senior third baseman Justin McDavid and redshirt senior shortstop Grant Buckner each had one hit.
Herman Petzold led the Irish at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run scored. Alex Robinson was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Eric Jagielo scored two runs.
West Virginia started the first inning in the second game in a very similar fashion to game one. Sophomore rightfielder Brady Wilson walked to lead off the game. After two strikeouts, Buckner reached on catcher’s interference. Gum then laced a double to left center that scored both Wilson and Buckner to take a 2-0 lead.
A strange bottom half of the first inning began with a Frank Desico single to left field and then stole second base. After a Sherry line out, Jagielo walked to put men on first and second, followed by a double steal by Desico and Jagielo. Both players scored on a wild pitch in which Musgrave’s plant leg hyper-extended and he was unable to cover the plate.
The Irish took the lead 3-2 leading in the bottom of the third when Jagielo scored on a dropped ball by WVU leftfielder T.J. Kuban. Notre Dame then added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 5-2 victory.
The squads will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 p.m., for the series finale. The game will be broadcast on WAJR and MSNsportsNET.com.
