FORTY YEAR RECORD THREATENED
April 15, 2011 03:42 PM | General
Assistant athletic equipment manager Steve Bierer pointed out that a 40-year NCAA baseball record held by West Virginia is under threat. Dale Ramsburg’s 1971 club set a collegiate record with a .985 field percentage on the way to a 21-6 mark.
The Mountaineers that season had a smooth-fielding infield that included Larry Boggs at third, JC transfer Don Schultenrich at short, ex-gridder Don Porter at second, John Raese at first and ex-gridder John Hale behind the plate.
The three regular outfielders in ‘71 were Joe Honce in center, Larry Myers in left and Larry Wilfong in right.
The Mountaineers successfully handled 972 of 987 total chances to eclipse Penn State's NCAA fielding mark of .978 in 1969.
West Virginia’s six losses were at High Point, at Marietta, at Virginia Tech, at Ohio, at Cal, Pa., and at Pitt. WVU was 13-0 at home that season.
This year, San Francisco, presumably with the help of deadened bats, are fielding at a .985 clip heading into a three-game weekend series at Portland. The 14-19 Dons still have 22 regular season games remaining, though, before the West Coast Conference tournament.
Here’s to a couple of USF errant throws into the bullpen this weekend to help preserve West Virginia’s place in the NCAA record books.
