MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team plays host to a pair of matches this weekend at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers welcome Tennessee and Ohio in the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Soccer Invitational on Saturday, April 16.
“We are looking forward to the competition that Tennessee and Ohio bring this weekend. At the same time, we know there is a bigger cause behind the matches,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown, whose team will don its pink and blue jerseys. “It’s a chance for us to improve as a soccer team but more importantly to raise awareness for breast cancer.”
Saturday’s contests, open and free to the public, are the sixth and seventh of the spring exhibition season for WVU. The 90-minute match against the Lady Vols will begin at noon and a 70-minute match against the Bobcats is set for 4 p.m.
Tomorrow’s contests are the second part of WVU’s efforts this spring to raise funds for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. On March 6, the team competed in the “Three’s a Team…the Fourth’s a Mountaineer” small-sided tournament at the Caperton Indoor Facility.
The WVU women’s soccer team has raised more than $60,000 over the past seven years to help fight breast cancer. All of the money raised goes directly to the Betty Puskar Breast Cancer Fund at WVU’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. Funds are used to support diagnosis and treatment efforts and to provide opportunities to help patients and their families in the midst of battling breast cancer.
