Baseball: WVU Travels to South Bend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team will travel to Notre Dame for a BIG EAST series with Notre Dame this weekend at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
Friday’s game will begin at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU, while Saturday’s first pitch is at 4:05 p.m. and Sunday’s finale begins at 1:05 p.m.
This will be the first time the Mountaineers have been on national television since the BIG EAST Championship semifinals in 2003 when West Virginia fell to Rutgers, 8-7, on ESPNU.
WVU (20-14, 6-3) was last in action this past weekend, sweeping Georgetown by scores of 4-3, 4-0 and 6-4. The weekend was filled with excellent pitching that was led by freshman lefty Harrison Musgrave who pitched a complete game shutout on Saturday afternoon. Musgrave allowed just three hits, while striking out two in nine innings of work. Redshirt freshman lefty Marshall Thompson went 7.2 innings the previous day, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out ten. Senior right-hander Andy Berry pitched for six innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits on Sunday. Reliever Josh McCauley pitched three innings in relief of Berry, allowing only two hits. At the plate, sophomore Matt Malloy went 3-for-4 on Sunday against Georgetown with one run and one RBI. Redshirt senior Grant Buckner finished the week 5-for-16 with one run, two doubles and three RBIs. Redshirt junior Dan DiBartolomeo was 4-for-11 with three runs scored, one home run and three RBIs. DiBartolomeo’s home run was his fifth of the season and turned out to be the game-winning runs on Sunday.
The Mountaineers are batting .312, tops in the BIG EAST, while placing second in fielding percentage (.972) behind St. John’s (.973). The Mountaineers also hold the top spot in slugging percentage (.444), runs (224), hits (350), RBIs (204), home runs (24), total bases (498), hit by pitch (52) and sacrifice flies (15).
Designated hitter Jeremy Gum leads the team offensively with a .364 batting average with 22 runs, 11 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 22 RBIs. Justin McDavid leads the squad with 30 RBIs, while DiBartolomeo has a team-high 35 runs scored.
The Irish come into the weekend series sitting in a tie for fourth place in the BIG EAST with a 4-5 conference record, 13-16-1 overall. Last weekend, Notre Dame fell to Connecticut in games one (3-1) and two (6-3), before defeating the Huskies 14-4 in the series finale.
Trey Mancini leads the team with a .350 batting average and has 21 runs, nine doubles, one triple, five home runs and 22 RBIs. Herman Petzold is also batting over .300 with a .305 average, while registering 12 runs, six doubles and 16 RBIs.
The Irish pitching staff owns a 2.92 ERA and .258 opposing batting average entering this week. Notre Dame also owns a 2.99 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Notre Dame’s starting pitchers have registered quality starts in 22 of 30 games this season and own a 2.90 ERA. The five-man rotation of senior RHP Brian Dupra, senior RHP Cole Johnson, senior RHP Todd Miller, sophomore RHP Adam Norton and fresh¬man LHP Anthony McIver have struck out 150 and walked only 41 in 198.1 innings of work.
The Irish bullpen carries a 2.96 ERA and owns a 4-4 record with six saves and has limited its op¬ponents to a .260 batting average. Irish relief pitchers have struck out 50 and walked 26 in 73.0 innings of work (nine of the 26 walks came in one game against Iowa on March 18).
