MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (8-12, 4-5 BIG EAST) defeated BIG EAST foe Connecticut, today, in a 5-2 match in Hartford, Conn.
The Mountaineers started the day by sweeping the doubles competition.
“I’m pleased that we competed well again,” says coach Tina Samara. “Getting the doubles point was a nice start and it’s something that we haven’t done too often this year.”
Freshman Mary Chupa and sophomore Emily Mathis won a close 9-8(5) match in the No. 1 spot, along with wins in the No. 2 spot (8-6) by sophomore Liv Pettersson and junior Veronica Cardenas and the No. 3 spot (8-4) by senior Ashley Pilsbury and freshman Melis Tanik.
The Huskies captured two points in singles, with victories over Tanik in the No. 1 spot and freshman Anna Rodionova in the No. 6 spot.
WVU captured the remaining matches in the No. 2-5 spots, with Chupa clinching the win for the Mountaineers in the No. 3 spot, in a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 match against UCONN’s Alexa Gregory.
“In a lot of our matches, we took the lead in the first set and lost in the second set,” adds Samara. “They may have not been playing their best, but it was good to see some of them battling to win that third set.”
Mathis (No. 2) and Pilsbury (No. 5) also won in the third set of their respective matches, while Cardenas defeated her opponent, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 4 spot.
The Mountaineers will conclude their regular season on April 28-30, as they travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete at the 2011 BIG EAST Championships.
